Licenciado en Derecho, University of Costa Rica (Honors, 1985); Master of Laws, Harvard University (1988). Admitted to the Costa Rican Bar Association since 1985.

He has extensive knowledge and experience in matters of Administrative/Regulatory Law. He had a prominent role as General Counsel in the creation of the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Trade (1994-1997) and the Housing Mortgage Bank, a public financial entity (1987-1990). He assisted in drafting key laws and regulations related to banking and foreign trade. He was a senior government advisor in the implementation of CAFTA-DR and other trade agreements, as well as in several international investment disputes. He has also served as board member in regulatory boards, including the Superintendence of Financial Institutions (SUGEF) and the Antitrust Commission (COPROCOM).

He has extensive knowledge and experience in regulatory and transactional matters related to the banking and financial sector and has provided advice to major financial institutions. He also provides legal and strategic advice to domestic and foreign corporations on matters of Competition Law, Data Privacy and Regulatory Compliance.

He has served on the boards and board committees of several major firms and financial institutions.

He has performed numerous consulting projects for the Inter-American Development Bank and other multilateral organizations and governments.

He has served as an adjunct professor of Banking Law, Competition and other specialized courses at the University of Costa Rica and currently at Lead University in San José.

Alberto Fernández López

Licenciado en Derecho, University of Costa Rica (1985); Master in Business Administration with emphasis on International Business, National University, San Diego/San José Campus (1990). Admitted to the Costa Rican Bar Association since 1985.

He has extensive experience as a lawyer advising companies in several sectors including construction, agribusiness, distribution, trade, and international transport, with special emphasis on the negotiation and structuring of complex contracts.

He has provided legal advice on major construction and public infrastructure projects.

He is an expert in Alternative Dispute Resolution (mediator, arbitrator, dispute board) and has handled many sophisticated judicial and arbitral proceedings, both nationally and internationally.

He has been frequently appointed arbitrator and arbitral tribunal president in international arbitrations under ICC, CFIA and CAM rules, as well as mediator in around 80 cases in dispute resolution centers in Costa Rica.

He is included in lists of arbitrators of dispute resolution centers in El Salvador, Panama, Venezuela, CIAC and CIAR.

He was a university professor of International Commercial Law and litigation strategies. He is also the author of several publications on commercial arbitration, as well as a regular lecturer in courses and forums on dispute board and arbitration.

He has been recognized by several international publications including Chambers and Partners, Who’s Who Legal and Leaders League. Who’s Who Legal has described him as “a true dispute resolution specialist whose impressive practice spans litigation, arbitration and mediation.”

She has extensive knowledge and experience in topics of International Trade, Foreign Investment and Government Affairs. Among others, she served as Director of Investment (2010-2014) and Director of International Trade Negotiations (2003-2005) at the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Trade, as well as Minister Counselor for Economic and Trade Affairs at the Costa Rican Embassy in Washington D.C. (1998-2001). She has also served in regional positions for several major corporations, including transnational corporations operating in Central America and the Caribbean.
